    Purpose of two tests

As we know that IELTS is an English language proficiency assessment test. A natural question arises – why are there two versions of the ILETS. A hint to the answer lies within the question. The two versions, IELTS academic and IELTS General Training, assess different proficiencies. Not all people require the same proficiency over the language.

The IELTS Academic test assesses a candidate’s readiness for pursuing higher education or to carry on professional work. For higher education, a prospective student would have to be part of the academic environment in a university/college. For discharging professional duties such as of an engineer or a doctor one has to deal with like-minded people from the same fraternity. Both these require a higher level of critical thinking skills.

While the IELTS General Training test assesses a candidate’s readiness to carry on everyday conversations at the workplace as well as general conversations with people around for routine transactions. The focus of IELTS General Training is on everyday use of the English language.
